GARMENT CARE

Colorful stack of patterned shorts
Shorts

General: Our shorts are made out of various materials, but most often cotton. Although pre-shrunk, over the course of several home washes (+/- 5-6) cotton will continue to shrink slightly (1-3%). We use one of two processes to pre-shrink our fabrics. Either: standard wash/dryer (hot/hot - only water - no chemicals) or Sanfordization. We pre-shrink before the cut and sew because this unlocks the internal stresses in the fabric, which results in less grain distortion, less puckering at the seams, and a better drape of our garments. The inseam length (on cotton shorts) will likely rise up +/- ¼” over time. The interior waistband is fused and will not shrink. Products with a linen/cotton blend are prone to higher shrinkage (3-4% - ½” inseam). Our light-weight poplin is cotton and therefore will shrink similar to above (1-3%), but also follows the logic that thinner fabrics wrinkle more easily. Washing: Our solids are meant to patina with time and therefore wash them as you would another laundry. For longevity of the patterned shorts, wash them inside out. Cool water, mild detergent, tumble - low heat or hang dry. Alterations: The garment (waist size) can be altered down at the back center seam. Note: removing fabric, will distort the garments back drape. Because we use 3/8” seam allowances, the garment (waist) cannot be altered up. Inseam length can be increased 1..25” with fabric from the hem. For specific tailoring questions please feel free to contact us for recommendations.

Dress Shirts

General: Our men's dress shirts are all 100% the highest quality long-staple cotton. Cotton does not shrink all at once, but it happens over time. Usually, the most shrinkage occurs during the first 1-2 washes and the amount of shrinkage decreases over time with each wash. The amount of shrinkage varies based on the type of yarn and the weave. Cotton shrinks more in the grain direction (longitudinal – generally the length) and less against the grain (latitudinal – often the width) Our dress shirt fabric is Sanforized at the mill and then double washed & dried (hot water/hot dryer – no chemicals) then conveyor pressed before cutting.

The advantages of this are that it removes any residual chemicals that were used during the weaving/dying process. This also brings the shrinkage down to within 1% of the ultimate/final size. Note: Our shirts are not “wrinkle-free”. Wrinkle-free shirts are not a product we offer. We do not like the feel, breathability, or the formaldehyde/ammonia process used to shock the fibers into line. Washing: Cool water wash, mild detergent - hang dry. (MOP buttons do not like rough laundering) Iron or steam for appearance. For any "yellowing" of white shirts over time, we do not recommend (oxygen/chlorine) bleaches, we suggest moderate diluted bluing. Alterations: Garment can be altered down. Because of the complexity in the collar/stand area, tailoring these areas is not recommended. For specific tailoring questions please feel free to contact us for recommendations.

Board Shorts

General: Our board shorts are either: 100% Polyester or our "flex" materials which are a Polyester/spandex blend (usually 3-9% spandex). Both polyester and spandex are made using synthetic fiber. At low dryer temps, our board shorts will not shrink. High heat or long dryer times could cause slight shrinkage. Polyester is very wrinkle resistant and does not need to be ironed. Do not use strong bleaching agents. Washing: Wash garment inside out to prevent pilling. Cool water wash, mild detergent, tumble - low heat, or hang dry. Alterations: Garment (waist size) can be altered down at the back center seam. Note: removing fabric, will distort the garments back drape. Because we use 3/8" seam allowances, the garment cannot be altered up. Inseam length cannot be increased. For specific tailoring questions please feel free to contact us.

T-Shirts

General: Our t-shirts are pre-shrunk ring-spun cotton. They will continue to shrink a total of 3-4% (mostly in the length). The designs are screen printed using water-based inks because they are long-lasting and have a softer hand. Washing: Wash garment as is typical of general laundry.

Chamois Shirts

General: Our chamois shirts are pre-shrunk cotton. We use fiber reactive dyes. The covalent bonding process of reactive dyes is very long-lasting. We typically give the garments a moderate enzyme and silicone wash after sewing for a softer, more supple garment. Washing: Wash garment as is typical of general laundry.
